The cover letter builder drafts letters that complement your resume — with live placeholders that pull from your CV and your target details.
Creating a cover letter
From Cover Letters in the dashboard, click Create cover letter. A panel opens on the right where you name the letter, choose a template, and pick an active CV that supplies your sender details. The new letter opens in the editor immediately. Like resumes, cover letters autosave as you type and appear in your dashboard list when done.
Linking a CV
A cover letter links to one active CV; that CV supplies your sender details (name, title, contact info) and the {name}, {title}, {summary}, {skills}, {phone}, {email}, and {location} variables.
- Only active CVs can be linked. Draft and archived CVs never supply sender data. If you have no active CV yet, mark one as Active in the CV Builder first.
- The Free plan has a single active CV. On Pro you can allow several (see Data and Settings) — any of them can back a letter.
- If the linked CV is later archived or set back to Draft, the letter no longer uses it; it falls back to another active CV, or shows no sender data until you link one.
- To change the linked CV, open the letter's Target step and use CV used for sender details.
The wizard steps
- Target — optionally link a job application from your tracker, and choose the letter's format (Letter or Email). Linking records which application the letter targets.
- Greeting — the salutation and opening paragraph (with a live variable for the company name).
- Body — paragraphs covering your background, the role, and why you're a fit.
- Closing — sign-off and signature.
- Review — full preview plus export actions.
Live variables
Fields can contain variables like {company}, {jobTitle}, and {hiringManager} (plus the sender variables from your CV, such as {name} and {skills}). Use the Insert control next to a field to add them. The {company}, {jobTitle}, and {hiringManager} variables resolve from the letter's Target fields, and the sender variables resolve from the linked CV, when the letter is exported or viewed — so one letter template can be reused across many applications.
Feedback
In Review, the Feedback card provides a deterministic checklist of opening, relevance, achievements, clarity, and closing quality. It is heuristic analysis that runs locally — it remains a suggestion and never overwrites your letter.
Export
Use the Export control in Review to download a print-ready PDF or TXT, or Copy the text. Cover letters are Supabase-backed and Supabase-only — they always sync to your account.
Status
Each letter has a status — Draft, Ready, Sent, or Archived — so you can track which letters you've actually submitted.
Tips
- Fill in the Target step's company and role fields so the
{company}and{jobTitle}variables resolve. - Keep letters to one page; the review step shows exactly how it will look.
- Set a letter to Sent after submitting it so your list reflects reality.
