Cover letter templates
Cover letter templates
Four free cover letter layouts for formal letters and email applications — Standard, Classic, Modern, and Professional. Preview any of them without an account, then write yours in the builder.
A cover letter is the one place in an application where you argue your case in your own voice, so the layout should stay out of the way of the writing. All four templates are built around a real letter structure — header, date, recipient, salutation, body, and signature — and each one also works as a short email application with a subject line instead of a sender block.
They are free, they preview without an account, and they share their visual language with the resume designs in the gallery above: Standard and Classic sit with the clean and conservative CVs, Modern with the contemporary ones, and Professional with the senior layouts. Pick the letter first or the resume first — either way the pair reads as one application.
Matching sets
Resume and cover letter templates that match
Send a CV and a letter that look like they belong together. Each pairing below shares a type family and an accent, so your application reads as one document rather than two.
Each set below pairs a resume and cover letter template that share a typeface, accent, and formality — so your application reads as one document. Start with a suggested pairing, or mix freely with the gallery filters above.
Suggested pairings
Cover letter and resume templates that share a style — a starting point, not a rule.
Both share a plain, whitespace-first look.
A matching serif pair for a formal, consistent set.
A matching modern, compact set.
A formal, senior pair for leadership applications.

CV or resume
CV template or resume template — what is the difference?
Almost none in practice — but the two names point at slightly different documents depending on where you are applying.
In the United States and Canada a resume is a short, targeted document, usually one or two pages, written for one specific job. In the UK, Ireland, Europe, Australia, and most of the rest of the world the same document is called a CV — short for curriculum vitae — and it can run longer, especially in academia and medicine. The design problem underneath is identical: present a chronological history, a skills block, and an education section in an order both a recruiter and an applicant tracking system can follow.
That is why every design in this gallery is built as both. The headings, section order, and spacing stay machine-readable whatever you call the file, and one template can be trimmed to a single page for a US application or extended for a European one. If you are unsure how much to include, the length guide linked below explains where to cut first.
Same sections, different name
Contact details, summary, experience, education, and skills appear under the same headings in both documents.
Length follows the region
One page for a US resume is normal; a European CV often needs two or more pages to cover the same ground.
One template works for both
Switch the label without rebuilding anything — the layout never hard-codes which word you use.
Choosing a template
How to choose a resume or cover letter template
The right template is the one that fits your experience and the way the job is screened. Use these guidelines to pick a starting point, then switch freely — your content stays the same.
Start with ATS compatibility
Single-column and simple two-column layouts keep your text parseable. All Talent & Story templates are built to be ATS-friendly.
Match the industry
Conservative and classic designs suit finance, law, and healthcare; contemporary and bold designs suit tech, product, and creative roles.
Fit your experience length
Airy templates work for short, entry-level resumes; compact templates fit dense, multi-role careers onto one or two pages.
Keep it readable
Whitespace, consistent headings, and a clear type scale matter more than decoration. Recruiters skim in seconds.
Match your cover letter to your CV
A letter in the same visual family as your resume reads as one considered application. The suggested pairings above are a starting point — the letter never has to match exactly.
Decide between a letter and an email
Every cover letter layout works both as a formal letter with a sender block and as a short email with a subject line. Use whichever format the application asks for; the content stays the same.

Resume and cover letter template FAQ
Are these resume templates free?
Four core templates are free forever, and you can preview every design without an account. Pro unlocks all 13 templates plus unlimited versions and exports.
Are the templates ATS-friendly?
Yes. Every template uses standard text, clean section headings, and no images-as-text, so applicant tracking systems can parse them.
Can I switch templates after I start?
Yes. Change templates at any time — your content is never altered. Only the layout and styling change.
Do I need an account to preview a template?
No. You can preview any template instantly without signing up. An account is only needed to build and export your resume.
Do you offer cover letter templates?
Yes. There are four free cover letter templates — Standard, Classic, Modern, and Professional — each usable as a formal letter or a short email application.
Are the cover letter templates free?
Yes. Every cover letter template is included in the Free plan, and you can preview all of them without an account.
Can I match a cover letter to a resume template?
Yes. Templates are independent, but the suggested pairings on this page point to designs that share a style if you want a consistent resume and cover letter.
What is the difference between a CV template and a resume template?
Very little in practice. Both describe a layout for your work history, education, and skills — the word changes by region. Resume is used in the United States and Canada; CV (curriculum vitae) is used in the UK, Europe, Australia, and much of the rest of the world. Every design here works as either.
Can I get matching resume and cover letter templates?
Yes. Each cover letter template is designed to sit beside a resume design with the same character, and the suggested pairings above point to pairs that share a style. Mixing freely is fine too — the letter and the CV never have to match.
Which cover letter template should I choose?
Use Standard for a neutral letter with no decoration, Classic for formal fields such as finance, law, and government, Modern for tech and product roles, and Professional when a senior application needs a longer, narrative letter.
